Unit description: A medium-sized unit-- smallish compared to many of the other units from the same midden. As is common with the units from this midden, 4848 is dominated by long bone shaft splinters, with relatively little axial skeleton except for the head. There are only a few iDable long bones, a pair fo astragali, a calcaneus fragment, and a couple of carpals. Overwhelmingly dominated by 003-sized animals, although 007-size bones are present. Weathering is consistently moderate. There is some burning. No apparent digestion. One fragment of a probable human skull, burned. 4mm flotation sample #2, 100% sorted, was recorded for diagnostics only, at a later date. This seems to be similar to the material from the dry sieve, almost all of the bone comes from 03 sized animals and a range of body parts. Consistant with the interpretation of the deposit as the result of in situ burning is the condition of the bone. All of the bone is burnt, but only at a low enough temperature to burn the bone brown or char it black. Weathering is minimal as is dog gnawing and digested material. Only a few bones are identifiable to element showing that the bone has been heavily processed. A couple of fragments of frog are the only microfauna present and no fish were found in the sample.
