Discussion: 5009 was the upper most oven base of F I F 540 which was truncated on all sides by the deep sounding to the north and cut 5008 to the south. The material was burnt to a solid surface and crumbling badly but was clearly held within the edges of oven cut. 

 

Consistency: Friable but baked solid in places 

Colour: Pale orangish brown (burnt in places) 

Texture: Silt 

Bedding: Massive 

Inclusions: 5% charcoal, 2% plaster flecks, occasional small stones, ash, flecks of clay 

Post-depositional Features: None obvious, but dry and eroded 

Basal Boundary: A sharp/ smooth distinct basal boundary, sloping northwards towards what would have been the centre of the oven.
