Discussion: 5098 was what appears to have been the remnants of oven F 539. It included a narrow strip of pale grey material (similar to the superstructure material of this oven) and a larger area of orange-nrown material that was scorched in places and contained many clay balls (similar to the make-up material of the oven). It was removed as a single unit. 

 

Consistency: Friable 

Colour: Brownish-grey in places, pale orange brown to the west/ south 

Texture: Silt 

Bedding: Compound layered 

Inclusions: Small flecks of charcoal, plaster, phytoliths and tiny pebbles-many clay balls 

Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustations 

Basal Boundary: Sharp, and distinct-lying in cut 5093
