Discussion: 5134 was a thick layer of clayey floor packing overlain by a thickish brown layer of trample/ floor surface was probably contemporary to the use of the oven F 556, in the south eastern area of building 23/ space 178. It was generally a very mixed deposit with no clear layering beneath the upper surface, and probably represents the earliest preparation of the area within the walls of the building for occupation. Although its north western edge was clearly defined and lapped up to wall F 551, to the south west it appeared to continue over the wall, and beneeath a fire installation which was being excavated. AS a result, a section of the deposit to the west was left un-excavated, and awaits excavation following the completion of the excavation of the hearth/ oven.
