Unit 5279
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: bedding/makeup
Data Category Information: Location: external; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 2.8m+ n-s, 3.4m+ w-e, 5 to 20 mm thick
Discussion: Very distinctive thin clay layer in eastern part of space 181. Quite widespread and looks like it was deliberatley laid. Widespread crcking suggesting it had been exposed to sun. Scorched to east of [5269] where it was under (5276) / (5277). Possibly surface/bedding for 'lime burning'.
Recognition: distinctive clay
Definition: limits of excavation, deep sounding, indistinct
Execution: trowel
Condition: moist
Consistency: firm
Colour: mid brown
Texture: sticky clay
Bedding: layered
Inclusions: occasional silt patches
Post-depositional Features: deep sounding, cut by [5269], scorched/heat affected at eastern end, frequent cracks filled with grey silty material
Basal Boundary: distinct, smooth, flat, anthropogenic

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Flot 3367 (3) - diagnostics id'ed - not fully analyzed A layer of clay in the midden sequence from space 181. It is a small but relatively dense unit which seems markedly different from the midden above and below. The bone is generally very clean light brown with some highly polished fragments. The polishing appears natural, the differences may be due to different processing of the bone prior to deposition. Taxa include sheep/goat, cattle and dog including an articulated dog radius and ulna. Fragment size is large and much of the bone appears post-consumption as well as post-butchery. There is some burning of the smaller fragments and a very small number of digested and gnawed pieces. Overall the unit lacks integrity as a depositional event, despite superficial evenness. Flotation sample #2, 100% sorted, had the diagnostics recorded at a later date. The bone was fairly well fragmented but signs of disturbance by dogs was minimal. About 30-40% appeared to have been heated to low temperatures and the occasional fragment had been heated to a high enough temperature to calcine them. Almost all of the bones were from sheep-sized animals and the few diagnostic bones were from a variety of elements. Overall, the material seems to be post-consumption waste which was not exposed for long enough to be ravaged by carnivores. Last number = 79Figurine Records: No Ground Stone Records: Yes
