Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Unit description: A 'dump' in Space 181; but quite different than the upper layers. Bones are less intensively processed, and there are some integral long bones present instead of the usual pile of little splinters. There are more large animals present, unlike the upper dumps; not many are identifiable, but may be large equid (the later dumps only have small equid) or more likely cattle. There is one very large goat horn core, much larger than the modern ones in our comparative collection. There is a low level of weathering all across the assemblage, but less gnawing than the upper dumps, and less digestion; this dump was not as intensively scavenged as the upper ones, even though the material in the dump would have been more attractive to carnivores than the upper ones. This unit resembles the Kopal faunal material found just above the marl (large animals, generally fresh condition, low fragmentation) and Neil Roberts believes that this unit, like Kopal units, was washed in by the seasonal flooding that he thinks would have affected these layers. The bones do not look water-rolled, however, and do not show the golden/orange colour that is common on the Kopal bones and that we are beginning to think may indicate water-logged deposits. There is no evidence for sorting based on weight or size that one might expect in a water-deposited assemblage. We will await the results of NR's and WM's close study of sections through these units before making conclusions. Dry sieve sample #4 was completely recorded, 4mm flotation samples #2 and #5 had only the diagnostics recorded. Like the material previously studied from this unit the bones are not intensively procesed, carpals amd tarsals remain intact and although long bones have been reduced to fragments they are not tiny splinters. In all these three samples there is a high proportion of digested bones showing that dogs had affected part of this unit, but like the previous samples gnawing is not common. All three samples show approximately the same very low proportion of burning and weathering which is also minimal. This possibly suggests that the unit was homogenius and it appears similar to unit 5328 which is a lower spit of the same context. Like the material previously studied, the bone does not show signs of water rolling. Occasional small mammal bones were recovered from the flotation samoples and a very small amount of fish from sample #5. Last Number = 298
