Discussion: Natural lake marl underlying alluvium. Rayher irregular and sloping down into centre of area on north-south axis. Given the irregularity in the surface of the marl, its relatively low height [c.999.05 to 998.9] and the lack of any alluvium without cultural material it would appear that the entire area has been truncated by digging for alluvium and marl as raw materials for building. When the marl was reached ground-water entered the trench flooding it to a depth of around 0.15m before the water level stabilised.
