Unit 5360
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Pure ash deposit
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: (See 5338 for sketch section. In some areas 5359 'domes' over ashy deposit. Could this be a small temporary oven burning very ignitable deposits-eg dried grass-no floor reddening found though).
Ash deposit within lined cut 5358. Pure ash no associated burning, deliberate cut and lined.
Could this be a significant deposit? I think it was bought here from a different place as the ash is selected. The lining of the cut contains the ash. It is covered in a white/ yellowish make-up deposit similar to surrounding 5336. Lack of floor layers or depris in the backfill (5355) suggest it was deposited at the time when the floor make-up (5336) was deposited possibly a marker or offering.
