Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 5-6 m in diameter, depth ca. 50 cms

Description: fill of pit containing approximately 18 sheep / goat skeletons

Discussion: This large pit is located immediately below the top soil (unit 7561). It was discovered upon encountering a cluster of sheep skeletons (N. Russel), that were cleaned in part on 14-07-03. After cleaning the whole square it became clear they belong to a large pit, ca. 5 m in diameter, not yet fully exposed.
The unit is interpreted as a recent ' burial pit' to dispose of infected sheep and goat, that could not be eaten. The bones are in good condition, which suggests a recent deposition. Also some pieces of glass were encountered during excavation of the top soil at this point (but not collected, as they were thought to derive from modern activities on the surface).
28-07-03.
In total some 18 sheep and goat skulls were found in this unit. Some of the sheep and goat skeletons were more or less in complete articulation, in other case there was partial completeness, for instance a complete but isolated legg, and finally some bones were completely isolated.

The soil in 7565 was generally very hard, except just below the skeletons, where it was powdery and loose. This soil be decomposed tissue.

In the surrounding matrix there was a substantial amount of lime, up to 10 %, which might have served as disinfectant.

Some pottery with bright green glaze was found in the unit which remains to be dated.
