Unit 7957
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: bin fill,platform packing
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform); Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Tracking: Full-On.
This unit is very soft and appears to be the packing material of a truncated platform in the sw corner. This has a very high concentration of small animal bones and also had a cache of 6 small clay animal figurines (U.7958). Under the mandibles (x1,x2) there was a brown lense of phytoliths, which was samples (s3). It is possible that this matrix is the packing material under a platform that is visible in the south and west wall profiles (Sample 1, U.7916). This area is disturbed by rodents. It appears as if the truncated surface once covered this area but was not plastered (or did not surive). The original surface went against the south 'partition wall' but not underneath it. The fill/ packing was halted at an aribitrary level because it is out of phase with the rest of the space at this time. It looks as if the deposit will continue for several more cm across the entire area. Also, under the cache, possibly 2-3 cm, another plastered surface is beginning to emerge but the surface does not extend across the entire area and is probably of a much earlier phase (as it appears to run under the basin U.7950). The E-W arm at the north end of this unit appears to go over 7957 but the deposit looks the same on the north side (in U.7954) so maybe the arm is later and than the original 7957 deposit is the same in U.7954.
7957 was a priority unit with some very interesting results from the specialists, such as a high density of lithics (greatest concentration in space 100) and an unusual animal bone assemblage, including turtle, bird and fish. Several phytolith samples were taken from under large artefacts (bone and pot) because it is thought that maybe there was an underlying mat of sorts. There was also an extrememly high concentration of egg shell here and I could see 3 tiny caches where there was a 'whole' but crushed egg.
Thickness of unit estimated in PX (DE 18/07/09).
