Discussion: This unit appears to be a floor in a series of oven floors which appear as very smooth, dark and compacted surfaces with a relatively high gravel content. The remaining surface only covers a small proportion of the area of the oven. 

 

Recognition: Extremely different from layers above and below. 

Definition: Clear contrast in colour and compaction. 

Execution: Trowelled in plan. 

Condition: Dry 

Consistency: Compact 

Colour: Dark grey. 

Texture: Loam. 

Bedding: Massive. 

Inclusions: Small gravel pieces (<3mm) <5% 

Post-depositional Features: none 

Basal Boundary: overlies a layer of burnt soil with a sharp boundary.
