Unit 8628
Category: layer dug in 2003
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: middeny packing - fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: Around 20 cm of midden-like deposit from the complete surface of sp. 88 was removed with this unit. We did it by using mattock since the layer consisted of stuffed greasy moist clay, rich in organic material. We consider this to be a packing although it also could be a fill of a space lying under earlier phase of sp. 88. Plenty of gypsum, bits of charcoal, animal bones, obsidian chips and several pieces of clay balls were part of this deposit as well as a broken figurine (x1).
While removing the soil we came to a surface of compact moist greasy clay of red, yellowish and gray colour in the S and the W part of the space. In W part this layer has a wall-like form but it does not seem to be a real wall.
The basal boundary of this unit is a layer, which is very similar in texture to the one excavated with this unit. The two layers are distinguished because of the slight change in the colour (red/orange patches within dark gray layer) and consistency (stronger).
The next unit will be a con- tinuation of the packing removal in order to expose interior faces of walls of sp. 88.
