Unit 8730
Category: layer dug in 2003
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Paleosoil
Data Category Information: Description: very mixed
Dimensions: Length is N-S, Width is E-W
Discussion: Paleosoil preserved under wall collapse (8710). The unit also contains a small are of topsoil to the west that was outside the area covered by the collapsed mudbrick wall but was not removed during the original phase of topsoil removal. Below unit (8710) Neolithic mudbrick walls were encountered as well as a couple of clearly definec grave cuts (Byzantine probably). There may also be a 'late' pit that caused some slumping of the topsoil in grid 1045/1155.
Valid 0 due to no depth (CAH 04/03/10)
Recognition: The deposit was recognised by its loose, homogeneous form overlying neolithic walls
Definition: Defined by the extent of the deposit without archaeological features or contexts that appear in situ
Execution: mattock
Condition: Not so hot
Consistency: Loose
Colour: Light grey
Texture: Sandy silt
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Occasional pot, occasional bone, occasional obsidian
Post-depositional Features: A few rodent burrows
Basal Boundary: Clear mostly but dippoing in the centre of 1045/1155, probably from slumping into 'late' pit
