Unit 8759
Category: layer dug in 2003
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Floor
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: dark grey clay
Dimensions: SW-NE=5.72m x 4.90m x 0.05-0.1m thick
Discussion: Largely surviving remnant of a floor surface within space 217 (8759) was clearly defined within its own shallow construction cut-8773, at the southern limit of the floor. Dexpite natural erosion of the northern 'half' of the floor, around 60% survived in good condition although the thickness varied. The floor was compact and solid suggesting a well made surface compatible with a high status building. The southern limit of (8759) defined the boundary between 217 and space 225 to the south.
Note: Digitised northern limit of the unit reconstructed from the sketch on the back of this sheet. CAH 23/07/09
Recognition: Below plaster floor 8846
Definition: Compact surface lipping up along the edge of its construction cut. Contrasted with the softer and more friable overlying layer.
Execution: Mattock/trowel
Condition: Hot/Dry`
Consistency: Firm
Colour: Pale-orangey brown
Texture: 'Mud plaster' similar texture to mud brick. Clayey silt-approx 30/70, contained a small percentage of fine sand <10%. Very fibrous-around 50-60% of the layer made up of small plant fibres.
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Occ. Small to med. Pot, bone, obsidian, stone and charcoal flecks. Small to med. Plaster frags.
Post-depositional Features: Worn away towards northern end of space 217-probable natural erosion when left open to the elements
Basal Boundary: Sharp, fairly smooth and regular construction boundary.
