Unit 8872
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: burial fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: N-S 45/60 cm; E-W 172 cm
Discussion: Unit 8872 comprises the fill within cut U. 8873. Both the cut and the fill are later than the white clay, excavated as U. 8871, that is why it was decided to be excavated first. The cut and the fill have damaged U. 8871.
At the beginning it seemed as a burrial - the dimensions, the orientation seemed to support this assumption. After we excavated a layer 40 cm thick and there was no indication of a skeleton, we decided to stop.
The fill consisted of loose gray-brownish silty clay mixed with ash. There were fine layers of ash within the fill. The fill contained also small pieces of mudbricks, pieces of animal bones, obsidian chips and pottery sherds (including several L. Roman/ E. Byzantine sherds).
An iron nail was found as well as a fragment of a clay ball.
The concentration of material was higher in the W part of the fill.
