Unit 8891
Category: Cut dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: burial cut
Data Category Information: Description: burial
Dimensions: 1.78m E-W x 0.55 m N-S (min 0.38 m N-S at W end)
Discussion: The cut appears to have been made as a single occurrence for a single burial in a W-E orientation and cuts through the E wall of Space 243. It is shallower than the surrounding burial cuts and the N and S sides of the cut are quite irregular, particularly where it truncates the E wall of Space 243. The E end of the cut was especially difficult to identify, and on closer inspection after the fact it appears it may actually have been dug past as the fill was at times quite difficult to distinguish from the surrounding soil. The base of the cut is quite irregular with a bricky layer below and the E end higher than the center and the W end. The cut, made for a single burial, seems unrelated to the architectural features in which it was made, evidence that it was a (much) later event. The number of similarly oriented burial cuts nearby may indicate this was part of a cemetary.
