Building 112

Area: North 

Location: North end of North Shelter, between B.1 and B.102 

B.112 is located immediately northeast of B.5 within the northern end of the North Shelter. The building was partially defined in the surface scrape that took place in 1993. At that point the building, which was not given a number, was interpreted to have been made up of spaces 35 and 36 to the north with a main space, space 38 to the south that contained a cell-like space, sp. 37 within its northwestern corner.

Excavations within the building took place in 2013 in spaces 37 and 38. Most of the building’s features were eroded away. However, excavations revealed that in fact the outer boundaries that defined these two spaces were in fact walls that have been directly built upon a predecessor, B.119.

The relationship of spaces 35 and 36 are not clear to the rest of the building. Excavations that took place in 2007 in the northern beam-slot foundation trench revealed wall that was highly eroded that aligns perfectly the building’s eastern wall F.220. This feature clearly runs beyond the northern extent of spaces 37 and 38. It is quite possible for spaces 35 and 36 to have been associated with B.112, but the nature of that association (external space, courtyard, pen, side room?) is unclear.

Buildings with small rooms about 1 to 1.5m2 that have been typically named 'cell' spaces in Southwest Asian Neolithic are not common at Çatalhöyük, although B.128 located immediately east of B.112 has a similar configuration.
Note that the internal square meter Calculation is based only on Spaces 37 and 38.
