Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: It's amazing how quickly an area changes in appearance after a few hours of picking, the depth of space 117 has transformed the Mell. area. The fill continues as horizons of dump material that change fairly subtley through (hues of radiant green to sea blue.oops where was I?), well sorted dump deposits, very different to the overlying ashy lenses that appeared to have accumulated over a period of time as discreet deposition events. Do the fills being excavated now represent imported material, if so why when the area was not constructed on immediately (actually this is open to debate), or was an abandoned area backfilled to revet neighbouring buildings as a building in a state of collapse may structurally weaken the surrounding buildings. Anyway we feel confident in excavating these fills at a fast rate, two sections have been established which will define the deposition events we might miss. I'm a bit concerned about the depth at this stage of the season, and how well the exposed walls will survive the following year. To the west in space 115, I continued working on wall 77. Excavated cut (1807) that ran the length of and cut the wall, in turn cut by the FT for the S wall of space 107. It was only on removing the top courses of wall 77 that it became apparent there were two walls. The extent of the surving plaster on the N face defined an early wall or feature with plaster continuing on to the west face. A later wall abutted the W face. This turn of events doesn't actually help contextually and is painfully slow (in the last week) to record.Entered By: Shahina Farid
