Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: It has been a busy few days lately and we have been working late on site, so no time for the diary. Work is going well as we truly approach the end of the season. The past days have been spent in two principal activities: section drawing and burial excavation. The section drawing has been done by Wendy assisted by Adnan, Mehmet and Serap. Section drawing finished today, largely, and Wendy is now collecting samples. Burial digging and recording has been done by Tona, Jenis, Bashak, Gavin, Louise, and me. So far we have a minimum of 21 individuals and likely to reach about 25. They comprise 7 adults, 11 juveniles and 3 babies and their manner of burial varies in terms of position and orientation. One adult is fully articulated but lacking a head. The platform, feature 13, has two discrete child burials plus a host of other scattered remains, mainly juvenile. Other patterns are emerging - only adults buried in the E part of the building. We are hoping to persuade Tona and Jenis to stay on beyond their planned Saturday departure - that will be a key factor in getting the burials finished before the end of the season. We can certainly get all the floors out of the way, and I really hope the burials can go too. Certainly most of them will be dug. We are completely finished with Space 70 - have dug through the sub-floor ash to reach the base of wall 1 and exposed a stretch of plastered wall face on the same alignment as wall 3 but 15 cm to the west - the first hint of the building underneath.Entered By: Roger Matthews
