Entry: 26th of June 2007 - Day Two

Arrived on site at seven am and worked to clean eveything in order for it to be photographed by Naomi.

After breakfast we were thoroughly briefed on the different fearures identified last year. The criss-cross pattern is *not* thought to be man-made but instead the work of insects/burrowing animals. I was set to work cleaning the plaster wall feature, which was somewhat nerve-wracking as not only was it very crumbly I was also far too aware of my own relative inexperience and the importance of this wall on site. However, I think I learned a lot, carried out the task to the required standard and have a much better feel now of the texture under the trowel and colouring of wall fill vs. mud brick vs plaster. I then helped in top soil removal near the trench 5 extension. Very satisfying wielding the mattock and hoe!

Post lunch I removed unit 14216, an arbitrary spit left behind from last year for no apparent reason. I did not find a great deal of anything particularly interesting but it was a good introduction to taking levels, labelling finds bags and filling in paper work. The Catal database requires much more information than I have been required to record previously. I think this is great as I am a firm believer in recording information about the archaeology we inevitably destroy in the excavation process as well as possible so future generations can use our data effectively.. but it does make for some time taken as I get used to the new sheets!

Thoughts for today - excitement! Finally working on features now and soon to start our own excavations. I hope we find something exciting. Also, unfortunately - pain! The mosquitos have feasted on my ankles.. Must beg, borrow or steal some spray before Friday when I can buy some in Konya.Entered By: Kathryn Hall
