Entry: | So, apologies for not having written an entry sooner. I have been unsure what to write about, we have been here a couple of weeks but so far we have been moving around a lot and haven't felt too settled.
We spent the first week or so un-backfilling Mikes house (Building 59), then moved to 'Little Britain' in the South Shelter - we reduced the latter about a meter, sorry Simon!
This week the digging has begun in earnest, as Mike and I returned to Building 59, and fighting the wind at the beginning of the week, set about cleaning and evaluating the floors and plaster deposits within the building in order to get a grip on the sequence. As ever the sequence is more complicated than we had hoped, but we remain optimistic (fingers crossed) that all shall be removed by the end of season.
I can't comment on the separate stratigraphic units and features within Building 59 at present since I have moved from the area whilst I attend to a couple of the Foundation Trenches for the new permanent shelter. My first is F.Tr.11, in the south-eastern corner of the buildings footprint.
It looked simple enough to start with, just a couple of Neolithic walls at either end of the trench and some infill. But sure enough things are never that simple and today we hit a Byzantine Burial (15012), clay lined with a wooden coffin - although, no sign of the Bod inside yet - tomorrow I guess!Entered By: James Taylor |
