Excavation Diary Entry

Name: Kathryn Elizabeth Hall
Team: West-Buffalo/Camb
Date: 7/3/2007
Entry: Tusday 3rd of June - Day Seven

Started the day by finally lifting skeleton 14241 and completeing all associated paperwork. It was a bit of a mess, with roots having ripped apart many of the vertebra and everything in a pretty fragmentary state. There was some intial doubt as to whether it was even human, with a very odd shaped manible turning up amongst the mixture of bones. Eventually we were reasonably confident it was and sadly consigned our theories of aliens inhabiting the West Mound to the bin. The fill has mostly been left in place - we dug into it approx. 5cm and although no basal boundary was clear, it semed very sterile and we stopped excavating there for the moment at least. Given the backlog of West Mound bones filling up the human remains lab, I shall go and help Helen with cleaning them after I finish this entry.

After lifting we moved to the baulk and began taking off a little more soil from the northerly edge 14253 to make it more even. After going down a mere few centimetres we encountered pit fill 13478 from last years excavation and continued to take out this fill. A mudbrick wall runs along the bottom of the pit W-E and so tomorrow will most likely be spent finishing off the pit and then seeing where it goes/joins up with.

I am very tired today and Helen really does need some help in the bones lab so I apologise that this entry is rather shorter than usual!Entered By: KH
