Excavation Diary Entry

Name: Ruth Tringham
Team: Bach
Date: 8/16/1997
Entry: Today we finished excavating the first arbitrary level of building fill in space 86. Ivan draws it (97/201).
Start excavating second arbitrary level of building fill in space 86 (except SE corner), now that we know (see last Thurs) that the wall plaster goes down deeper (and therefore the floor is down there somewhere). Miriam and Ayse start under 2200 (unit 2213), but fairly quickly come onto a hard surface where they stop. Just very compact building fill or the beginning of floor?

Jason's mother and father visit. Frank arrives. Roger comes for a visit! Great!
Vladimir, Ayse, Miriam, Anne-Marie: Finish cleaning skeleton (2219) of F. 150 for drawing and photo. Its very poorly preserved but is clearly a big person! I photo burial showing how it seems to be cutting through little N-S wall and possible platform of space 86. It's not clear whether it abuts or cuts the main west wall of space 86. There is a chunk of what looks like wall at its head.

Rissa and Jason: Clean the Bukranion in space 89. It seems that there are two other parts of horn cores to the north of the big complete one. Photo this. Rissa thinks that maybe there was a series of superimposed cores on the wall or floor à la Mellaart. Maybe one (or more) fell and crashed to pieces, whereas the one that is complete just tipped over. We shall see when we clean the base and below of the bukranion. I wonder about the heavy implications about calling this a "bukranion" as opposed to complete horn and skull of bos p. The big problem with our buk. in space 89 is whether its nose is pointing down and therefore might be preserved, or whether it was pointing up and has therefore completely disappeared for us. The other problem is how to preserve it. Frank arrives today, so we'll wait to hear what the maestro says! The east wall of space 89 is not yet clear. We wonder whether it has been dug into by a later pit.
Rissa, Vladimir, then Kathy: Start excavating second post-Neo burial that cuts through space 88 (F. 151: 2211/2212). Fill is hard grey material, unlike soft stuff of first burial.
I finish cleaning out unit 2208 against the west edge of space 86. There is definite "platform/bench stuff" (what do we call this?) coming up in the eastern part of this unit. Level it with the rest of the units at the end of the first arbitrary level. Photo.
Photo possible platform/bench stuff in 2202 and 2207.
