Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: OK, so photo things:

The board - serves the function of telling you where north is, and what is in the photo, most importantly unit and feature numbers so you can cross-reference with the documentation. Scale also gets put in the shot, this is (obviously) to help you judge how big things were.

Problems:
-The board is big and can obscure features.
-Some things are so small that it becomes a little ridiculous to have a board in the shot
-Some photos are of such a large scale that you can only read the board if you zoom right in when looking on the computer

Ok, so I think that originally having a board in the photograph was because it would be impossible to tell what you had without, as there's the negative processing situation. I think digital does change things a bit, because you can look at the photo as soon as you've taken it, and more importantly you can take lots of photos. I think it would be folly to remove the board from all photos, but also a waste of time, and potentially lose information to include it in all photos.

Conclusion from my perspective - just have the board as a guideline, so at least one photo in each set of a feature with the board, and used whenever it wont be possible to tell from context where a detail fits in the whole photo. However, I am young and have much to learn, so would appreciate the wisdom of others on this too.

Right. Moving on. Scale: I think I should use the scale more, but I'm not sure how much. Hmmm... will think more tomorrow.

Right, photos:

Grave, Turkish team. Looked like mud bricks round the edge with fill in the middle. Was kicking myself that I never got round to learning any Turkish before I came to Catal, as it was pretty impossible to communicate what I wanted to do. I found myself thinking about what it would be like to be digging in your own country surrounded by people who don't speak your language, and couldn't picture it. It is a bizarre concept. But, yeah, I guess the onus is on me to learn some Turkish if I get the chance to come back next year. Easier said than done though.

Fill of the grave I shot yesterday after removal of the top stuff, so fill 2 as I called it then.

Grave, work in progress.

Oh, and U1500 and U1503, trench 7. There's a mud brick line against the section of the trench, which I photographed, and also the pottery in the corner once more.

Digging: was a bit of a mess. There just aren't any clear features to see in the area we're at (U14213). I don't mind continuing there, because I think that apart from the Byzantine graves and charnels most of the site is a bit difficult to read. Eva showed me how to identify a mud brick today, which was very useful. I get a bit keen and think everything with any density to it is a mud-brick, so it's good to have a better idea of what isn't so we can get through things better.

Really like the whole team- I think they're really great to work with. I think over the last few days we've all got to know each other better, and everyone's got some interesting stories and a good sense of humour, so yeah, erm lovely working with you all.

Too tired to think of anything more. Onwards and photo-sortingwards.Entered By: N. Christie
