Excavation Diary Entry

Name: Maxime Brami
Team: West-Buffalo/Camb
Date: 7/5/2007
Entry: Is it just an impression or the West Mound team is the only team to write in the diary section? I have asked the Stanford team whether they did that and they didn’t seem to even know what I was talking about and I don’t see many entries from people of other teams in the diary central database. How fair is that? I must say that I am very impressed by the quality of the diaries of the people of my team and in fact I think I quite enjoy it as it is the place where I can criticize or say what I want to do next, etc... Peter proposed me today to join in the deep sounding trench, so maybe he read my diary? I want to excavate EC stuff and enough of mole holes and other Byzantine disturbances. Maybe we should just get rid of all this Roman-Byzantine material by using the machine that dug the deep trench and sell all the finds (except EC painted shards) on Ebay. I am sure we could make a lot of money out of it to finance next year excavations! I am just joking obviously…

More seriously, today with Naomi we continued excavating the palace of a mole (13783). I found a lot of what seems to be mudbrick features. Eva and Peter thought it may have been a collapsed mudbrick wall, which would be a very unusual feature. As far as I am concerned I don’t know (I know I am supposed to be the person excavating this feature), however I am really impressed by the Northern profile at 13783 level: we have clearly mudbrick/mortar/mudbrick layers and maybe 6 or 7 layers of these. The problem of the mudbrick here is that it lies on top of very soft mortar, almost undistinguishable from mole tunnels and which is (too) easily removed. Naomi is excavating a late burial with tiles delineating it and she tells me fairytales so that I am not bored excavating mole architecture. Alex is excavating feature 2416 and he is exposing a very nice articulated female and Franck is reconstructing in 3D the coffin of this nice lady. What else? Gen (I should call her Bernadette because she calls me Francois) is still digging in the deep trench (T5). Ingmar came today with a weird golf hat today in the trench, die Ameisen were very annoying during our Breakfast, etc…

Visit of the site in the afternoon: I am really impressed by the midden in the area 4040 as well as the progress made in the South shelter area. However, I think that the best part in the visit was the presentation of Peter of Trench 7: this is the most impressive trench that I have seen today and I am really looking forward to work on it! Tomorrow is the fieldtrip, I think that it will be brilliant but I need to find some time to do some research on the sites we will see.Entered By: MB
