Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: The dreaded meep-meep-hole rodden fill, abutting the mudbrick wall 2408 in the south-west corner of trench 5, is now being taken down! The morning involved a great deal of brushing over a large and rather dusty area, ready for a photo which Naomi kindly took with the aid of some sunlight-blockers and their makeshift tools (Eva, Ros, and me). Once the photo was taken of unit 14278, Naomi and I were able to begin removing it.

14278 is a mixed, heterogenous, fill of mortar and mudbrick. It was nice to begin taking it out from its eastern most side, clearly visible, however, we encountered what seems to be a different layer to the fill, which in the afternoon sun, was quite difficult to distinguish in colour. Tomorrow morning should be much better for us to assess the extent of the fill in depth. There is a possibility that the mattocking may have revealed a mudbrick wall, but until further cleaning and defining has been done it will remain elusive.

Trench 7 looks awesome!

Alex’s room looks magnificent and sadly, he will have to leave it in the good hands of someone here on the West mound. I think it should be me. My precious now!

The news of the ‘Islamic burials’ was interesting. I want to say exciting, because I like drama, but this is a really sensitive issue that has been reacted to well. As a result, our fill 14278 will not be taken out fully. An arbitrary cut will be made on the northern side of the fill as not to disturb the cut and mudbricks of the neighbouring grave just to the north of it.

Tomorrow should get better.aEntered By: TEB
