Entry: I really enjoyed taking out the rest of 14278 today. Mattock! Well, hand mattock anyway - we still have to be careful. The rubble sits on top of what appears to be some sort of surface. The surface, quite compact, can be seen in the profile of one of the animal burrows, roughly 2cm thick there, and presumably of a similar depth in the surrounding area.

Naomi stumbled across an amazing find today! Apart from the beautiful, 'early' Calcolithic sherds (still in situ), she found a 'cannon ball'. After several tests for magnetism by Frank, using a charged trowel and then a knife, it appeared that the object was slightly magnetic, confirmed as it 'affected' the arrow on a compass. Was it metal? Sadly, no. Ingmar arrived and thought it was stone, and after a quick bath, the spherical object, slightly flatter on its poles, was in fact made of stone. What was it used for? There are several possible reasons, but aside from cooking, my favourite is that it was used as sling shot - not for game, but for war1 Against whom, might we ask? Who resides on the other side of the canal other than the east mounders? Fascinating little object with a story to tell, or rather, for us to speculate upon.

In the fill was also a nice hand sized lump of dark red plaster. It was sent to be sampled.

The weather was hot, but the day was satisfying. On a personal note, I might be loosing hair!!! On the back of my head, a thin, in parts bald, patch has appeared!! Ich habe meine hare veloren!

Off to do some more pot washing shortly.
