Entry: | Today was a fairly productive day in terms of figuring out what was going on with some of the wall situation both in the pit (15305, 15306) and the area beyond to the east and west. Ray and I started out by taking off some of the top layer of the northern boundary of the pit to get down to a definite layer of mud brick. This was done under the unit number 14213 again, and looks like it will extend past some of the area north of the animal burrow (14218).
Meanwhile to our east, Frank and Eva were going through the mud brick in that section, trying to figure out how everything was lined up. After a long process of looking at mud brick down there, as well as comparing that to what was being found in the pit, we have an idea of what is going on. It looks like there are two walls that are farily close to one another (maybe about 10 cm apart), with the plaster perhaps on the southern wall face and fill in between the two walls. Frank thinks the northern wall (which is more yellow in color than the other wall, a grayish color) is later but that they were both up contemporaneously.
It looks like we may have evidence for this same gap in the walls in both the pit as well as near the wall section in the western profile of the trench. However, the northern (yellow) wall may have fallen over slightly or been truncated by a pit, since we lose the mortar and brick lines near the top of northerwestern corner of the pit, and also digging on top of that area the soil seems more fill like than brick like.
I almost forgot, we also cleaned out and photographed a small pit on the eastern side of our big pit. This was unit 14283. It contained some mud brick in it as well, although was not deep enough to get a good profile.
Overall, I think we made a lot of progress in that area, and hopefully when we come back tomorrow, it will still look the same after everything continues to dry out.Entered By: KJK |
