| Entry: | Diary seems like faff today after spending too much of our lab hours discussing them. I am a little more wary this year of their usefullness as very few people on site do them, and a west mound diary collective somewhat restricts the initial aim.
As far as finding a name for our team goes, I rather like CAGE (cambridge american german exacavtors) or PAW (pan-atlantic westmound), but there are other issues afoot...
Archaeology excellent today. TEB found a nice little vessel in the corner of trench 5 although the architecture is still proving elusive, with many disgreeing on where things are, if they exist at all. And so, after a morning of hand picking away the surface 14285 and the level below it 14287, I was moved to trench 7 to excavate the skulls in the profile of 15101.
The two skulls are poking out and we arent sure if they are articulated. Starting with the most northern one, it was clear that the orientation is highly unusual. The juvenile is head facing east (non-Christian) and face heading NW (non-normal). Difficult to know where this little person comes from, and it is all too optimistic to think it may be the first chalcolithic burial on the mound, but the position of the scapula suggest it is not crouched. Never mind. SH has been a big help and I'm a bit scared of excavating this one alone- digging down 1.5m of dirt onto the crushed head of a very old skull doesn’t fill me with optimism. Hopefully weather will stay windy and overcast, making life much more bearable.
Feeling a little torn this evening between working in the lab (which I havent done for a while but will need to now excavating late burials has the all clear) in DO style, versus filling in the paperwork/ pot washing in the evening. Loyalties very much towards the lab at the moment, where the enthusiasm lies. I cant get excited about surfaces which arent floors. Sorry TEB.Entered By: HSL |
