Excavation Diary Entry

Name: Thomas Birch

Entry: Today started off brilliantly. Working with HSL and NC was fun, as always – but finding the miniature vessel in 14287 was brilliant. Also in 14287 were several ‘smooth stone’ fragments recorded (quernstone?).

Layer 14285, on top of 14287, was roughly 2cm thick. It was decided not to take more time with ‘micro-stratigraphy’ in these disturbed layers, but instead to take 14285 and 14287 out at the same time carefully with a hand mattock. We’ve come down onto another layer, without a unit yet, which is quite yellow and very soft. Hopefully we’ll be able to take out more layers tomorrow in order to expose the elevation of the mudbrick 14286 (quite soft, ashy, and looking to be very thick indeed).

Apart from that, the shelter acquired a new row of fabric to protect our burnt skins, and the Selcik team returned to remove the Byzantine/Islamic burials having received permission and the thumbs up from Ian and co.

I’m looking forward to the new ‘team name’, something we can all identify with, and to some more exciting archaeology in this last week we are entering.Entered By: TEB
