Entry: Grumpy old day today, may have something to do with the dust and wind, but suspect the so called permatrace played a part, so so bad. Anyway seems I eventually have something of interest to write about. Have been digging in Foundation trench 7 and so far so straight forward, no burials like so many of the others. Three different walls so far, but one, F2840 is composed of several different brick types, looked like nice orange bricks for upper courses the lower covered by plaster and make up, which when removed revealed the lower 4 courses to be of grey bricks (15611). Now this is the first I've seen in the 4040 but I have seen them in the south. Curious. Anyway Serena came up and took some samples, she also commented on how they shouldn’t be there as they are more like level VIII or IX.
So good evidence for reuse of materials, perhaps taken from an earlier building. However pos quite a lengthy time gap between the original use and reuse, was a building still in use untill this time and then some material taken for building or did they know where to go to get it and potentially have to dig down to get it. Reminiscent of midden pit on 4040 [13148] but from digging that the impression is that the material was quarried as a raw material to be remade into bricks rather than individual bricks removed.
Bit of plaster showing up on one, suggesting it was removed fron elsewhere but will finish digging it to find out for sure. So maybe some of these structures standing for considerable lengths of time!Entered By: Simon McCann
