Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Finished in two of the eastern foundation trenches last week and have moved inside the shelter to the block of truncated strat left by the foundations of the NE corner of building 41 that was never dealt with in 2006. This area had to be taken down into phase before foundation 14 was dug. Removal of midden layers and room fills showed that the area formed a eastern space to Building 55 that had been truncated to the north by the midden pits. In plan building 55 is very similar to building 59 apart from the northern storage spaces. The area excavated over the past couple of days was the western side space (322) partially seperated by a N-S wall projecting southwards from the northern wall. There also appears to be a post retrieval pit and the floors lip up to a division to the south.
Removal of the roomfill (14926) showed that the space (322) had dirty floors and of particular interest was a concentration of fruit stone that the bot team excavated with a pounding stone found adjacent. Whilst cleaning the sides of the pits truncating the floors to the north baby bones, popped out of the section, these are not stratigraphically released for excavation so they were 3D'd and lifted.

The space is now planned and photographed allowing foundaition trnech 14 to be started. The trench disgonally crosses the southern wall of space 322 and the midden (14931 in space 315) outside within the foundation trench has been excavated to formation level. This revaled the NE corner of a space formed by wall F2758 and 2759 just within the foundation trench. I suspect that this may be related to the buildings that Richard started to define under the midden deposits to the south of Building 59 last year.
