Removed outside wall/structure of oven [2870] up to section line. Removing these parts of the oven in reverse stratigraphic order Photographed oven with most of this half of [2870] removed. Photographs so far generally taken in less than optimum lighting conditions, and with the problem in this space at present of flour-sack sandbags which are being used to hold up slumping walls being in the way. With a feature such as this oven would like there to be publication standard record shots taken.
WM took micromorphology sample through material at W.end / entrance end of oven - through some of infill [2852] at top, the ashy deposit [2859], oven floor [2865] and layers beneath. Asked WM about taking archaeomagnetic samples for dating because of strat. sequences of ovens. Suggested that could try and take using magnetic compass but probably inadequate; -also no. of samples needed. Surprised no established programme/system for this.
Planned and removed ‘outer lining’ [2843] up to section line. Planned ‘inner lining’ [2860].Helping TC starting to clean up W. end space 151.Entered By: Richard Turnbull
