Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Today DE and I finished excavating FT 19; all we need to do is plan the east section and then we should be finished. I will move back to FT 4 as the burial issue has been resolved and the burial is out. FT 19 was a nice trench though, and I appreciated the chance to sort out the relationships and paperwork myself for a while, though getting the input of so many experienced excavators was key in figuring out relationships--I didn't feel as bad about myself after I had four or five people all standing around my trench coming up empty. We still do not know the purpose of feature (2842), and there is the possibility that it would have become clear if we were able to open up the north section of FT 19, but time runs short and the trench has already been stepped in 10cm on each side after the architects changed their minds about the size of the pits.

Overall, the trench was interesting in that it had a lot of things going on--a possible "street" abutting an exterior wall and the previously mentioned feature that had an collapsed, eroded top. I took too long excavating the various components of (2842), but was happy that it turned out to be something at least marginally interesting. The fill that I excavated was only burnt on top, then it was construction fill the rest of the way down. The whole thing was sitting on top of a square brick platform and abutted wall (2847).

I'll be happy to move on to FT4, especially if the wind is a little less awful in a deeper trench. It's been really frustrating to be working in gale force winds--combined with the various equipment shortages it makes the pace on site come to a crawl at times.Entered By: CLM
