Beam Slot (Between FT4 & FT5)

Location and background:

Formation level: 1011.01ASL; Max depth 0.78m.

This trench is located in the 4040 area, but was outside the limits of the 1993 scrape. Initially excavated to remove the top soil, there were no features apparent in the initial pre-excavation stage. The trench falls between foundation trenches 4 and 5 (from here on, FT4 & FT5) and was excavated for the construction of a new building.

Stratigraphic Summary:

The limit of excavation of this trench was the top of the midden (16062) which was also apparent in FT4 (15927) and FT5 (15437). Sitting directly on top of this midden (16062; FT4 15927, FT5 15437) was an E-W running mudbrick wall (f. 3009; 16078, 16087) with two courses apparent. This wall was abutted to the north by a series of heavily truncated floors (16061; FT4 15660). There was an overall fill incident (16077; FT4 15651, FT5 15026) on top of the wall, midden, and floors which was ashy and corresponded to a fill truncated by a burial in FT4. Overlaying this all and just under the topsoil was an orange, sandy fill (16054; FT4 15405, FT5 15015).

The excavation of this beam slot enabled us to link, to a limited extent, some of the stratigraphy found in foundation trenches 4 & 5. The most salient feature was picking up the series of floors (16061) abutting the wall (f. 3009) which seems to confirm the existence of an interior space within FT4.Entered By: CLM
