Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: 30th July. A productive day on site - at last. There was one delay when the level disappeared to West, but unlike last time it returned in reasonable time and I was able to finish what I was doing. I thought I would be taking out 2895, a gritty grey and white deposit with micro-fauna in it, but it seemed to be overlain by a yellowish deposit I thought initially was bricky. However, it turned out to be more owl pellet stuff, with lots of micro-fauna, so 2896 is the same as 2091 from last year. Below that was bricky stuff 3108, which seemed to overlie 2895, but further investigation suggests it’s really the other way around. I didn’t get it finished - as Shahina mentioned at the start, there are lots of interdigitated layers which are complicated to unravel. (Thought I’d include that word somewhere - it seemed to be favourite word of the season last year, but I don’t think I’ve used it yet…). The site tour really cut work time - now we go to West as well, be had to stop productive work at 1.30. A number of people were too tired to traipse around in that heat, and I’ve heard various suggestions about changing the time - to morning, or to 5pm, when it’s cooler.Entered By: Naomi Hamilton
