Entry: Work in space 271 has been continued. Between various layers of dump material there has been a sequence of firespots. Additionally a clear surface (16714) was excavated sealing the largest of the fire spots (16715). The surface was a laminated deposit with a number of phytoliths present within the makeup of surface and the top of the deposit had a greasy appearance probably from a build up of residues during the use of the area. As the deposits in the space had been building up, a large number of modifications to wall F2011 took place. This was a complicated series of rebuilds, and additional courses added to the external face. These events all appear to have been to maintain this retaining wall protecting the southern wall of building 52 as the space between buildings 55 and 52 filled in with dumps and deposits from insitu burning events. The last part of wall F2011 was removed today with a continuous deposit (16719) underneath. This started to be excavated and overlies (at the eastern end where deposit has been excavated) another wall on the same alignment as F2011.
At the western end of space 271, the deposits are earlier than wall F.2139 so excavation has ceased in the western part of the space untill the deposits to the north of the wall have been reduced and wall can be removed.
