Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: In space 154 we continued removing the deposits left against the walls. This revealed that the southern wall 224 has two quite large recessed features and the eastern wall 229 has one smaller one. The exact function of these is unclear as we have left the fills in. We also revealed a narrow ledge to the south of wall 228. In space 157 Mark continues to find more bins, there are now definitely four and potentially six. He has also defined the clay lump collapse deposit so it can go soon. Åsa is continuing on the fallen wall in space 157. In space 155 Adnan has been cleaning back to the walls and has removed the plaster collapse between spaces 155 and 154.

Frank was in quite a lot as Building 5 has been labelled as for ‘intermediate display’ so everything has to be conserved. Hopefully we can work around him. I am more concerned about what this means in terms of what I will be allowed to dig in Building 5, I am worried that we will reveal a nice palimpsest but will not be able to gain much real understanding and that we may also damage the building as an entity by excavating a few bits and destroying some evidence by partial excavation.

Found out that the first ‘space tour’ will be on building 5 via a notice on the dining room door. Obviously as the mere supervisor of the area no one thought that it was worth consulting me or asking me if I felt ready. We haven’t excavated any building 5 deposits yet or even fully revealed it so this is premature to say the least. It tends to confirm one of my fears that space tours will consist of lots of very general discussion and not focus on anything in enough depth to be of practical value. I wonder if they will prove to be any more productive than chatting over a beer on the veranda.Entered By: Craig Cessford
