Today I can formally announce the attribution of two space numbers in Trench 5 of the West Mound, 340 and 341, both of which are delimited by walls on the four sides. Space 341 corresponds to the fill 16859 that Katie, Jana and me cleaned yesterday, while space 340 corresponds to unit 16839, which I have drawn with Jemima. It is good to realize that the units on which I have been working finally turn up to be essential to the comprehension of the whole trench. I also feel that I have now a better understanding of the unit sheet system with mid x and y, elevations, dimensions, etc.. (I needed two years!) So, life is becoming easier.

Most of the day, I have also worked on the room fill 16838 (formerly arbitrary layer 16825), in the Western part of the Trench with Sonia and Jemima. This was a bit complicated in the beginning since we had to use some documentation already established by Jemima, extend the unit and combine it to 16838. Although it is too early now, it seems that this unit will also be attributed a space number in the near future, since it is delimited by walls on at least three sides so far (respectively F. 2413, F. 2425, F. 2426, and another wall on the eastern side which has no feature number yet). Unit 16838 is large and cut by numerous pits (including 16816 and the Grave F. 2416 taken out last year by Alex). A tile turned up, which probably indicates a new grave. X finds included a small piece of Byzantine glass found in a molehole and an almost complete clay ball, which seems to have been pierced with a needle for some obscure reason.

I will discuss unit 16838 in more detail in the next days and will also try to include some comments about theory and methodology, since Catal should also be a place for discussion and experimentation.
