Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: (A note to other west mounders who've been having this problem: If you go to Unit/Feature/Space number fields without saving the record, you'll lose anything you've typed in the diary field since Access last automatically saved).

Today was the first day I finished a daily sketch before dinner! I think I've got the in-field recording system and autocad down well enough to progress nicely with the mapping/surveying work. The timing is just right, as I think Alex and I will be able to start working on the long shot soon.

With Tom and Dan's help all but three of the walls were mapped as features. If we have time as we uncover them I will go back and shoot the individual bricks as I did with 2428, 5050, and 2425. This makes for visually pleasing maps, but it is not necessary for what Tom needs from the daily sketches at the moment.

The walls and intruding disturbances (16861, 823) make the three spaces in the center of trench five very obvious on the map. The spaces are aligned on north-south across at about 695m E, separated by double-wide mudbrick walls. One of the walls (5050/2425) looks to be continuous across 3/4 of the trench, except where a historic grave (2416) cut it. The walls defining the spaces are still unexcavated, and difficult to link up.

In the west we're still about 40-60cm above the level of the spaces. I look forward to getting down to about 1005.35.
