Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Pretty frustrating day today. We wanted to finish the drawing of the wall situation in the NW corner of the square which we began yesterday. However, this turned into a day of scraping, brushing, trying to see something, not seeing what we had seen half an hour ago, but instead seeing something else, asking somebody else who had totally different ideas, and still not understanding the whole situation. The main problem are the pits and mole holes which make it really difficult to understand the relationship between the wall fragments we identified. This part had been excavated last year, and apparently was not clear to the excavators as well, given that there are only three feature numbers available for up to six or seven possible walls, wall phases repectively. Of course the whole thing did not become better visible this year, because everything is so dried out and crumbly. Furthermore, for me as somebody who did not see the walls during excavation last year it is impossible to figure out why this bit of a wall face or edge is missing - was it disturbance, or mistakenly removed by the excavator, or did it break off?
I hope thing will become more clear tomorrow morning, otherwise we will have to await further removal of fill around the walls and hope for things to become clearer then - and perhaps redo the whole drawing.
