Entry: | It is now 23.18 in the evening. Between 20.00 and 20.30 I attended a meeting to discusss why people are not writing diaries. Between 20.30 and now I have spent all my time dealing with a set of samples [chemical/phytolith/phosphate] taken about a week ago. This set which come from just one group of floors in Building 5 have already taken me over 4 hours and I have not finished dealing with them yet. This sort of paperwork is not why I do archaeology but it is why people at this site do not enter diaries on the computer.
Anyway now for a tour of Building 5. In Space 155 this was Serdar's last day. He and Adnan are still removing infilling but it is looking interesting, maybe one day I will understand what is going on. In 156 Asa is still going slowly through no fault of hers, the latest hold-up was the discovery of a basket impression. Mark did lots of recording in space 157 and also investigated the last bin. He also seems to be questioning if he has really bottomed the bins. In 154 Sharon is still clearing off the inflling over platform 239. I did some recording and then half sectioned the oven F.242. It looks like it was a well made large domed oven. It was not carefully infilled like the one I excavated last year but seems to have been deliberately smashed with much of the superstructure ending up on the floor of the oven but other bits travelled up to c.1m away ending up mixed in with the infilling.
I am really beginning to doubt that we will achieve some of our targets for this year. We have achieved a lot just to get down to building 5 and I would really like to dig some floors but this might involve severely compromising on recording and end up damaging our potential to understand the building in the future.Entered By: Craig Cessford |
