Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Everbody seemed a bit tired today, even the lovely finds (e.g. a bead from unit 16880 continued by JMR - space 340) and a potstand from unit 16898 (space 310, continued by AWH) couldn't make us sing and dance in the trench. Work progressed much faster now as Ismail is doing the sieving, but some people in the trench have the impression that he does not retrieve as much as they did. Will spend some time tomorrow chatting with him, as being alone at the sieve can be pretty boring, and retrieve stuff with him.

JJW started to clean the planum in the NE corner to finish unit 16885, while DEL continued roomfill 16896 in space 342. MB identified and dug a shallow late pit cutting into the new and different fill soil of space 343 that forms the basal boundary of 16886 as unit 17211. SO tackled the unit 16894 around the cluster of a potstand, two millstone frags and a vessel. So far I can"t really make sense of that assemblage. I think at least the potstand and one millstone frag are fimly imbedded in a roomfill-like soil, and I can see a EW running mudbrick wall nearby. The other items, however, seem to be surrounded by loose soil - just moleholes around them or a pit?

I drew the plan of wall 2424 and buttress 5063, singling out two 80 by 40cm bricks (one in the wall, one that forms the buttress). That corresponds well to the format French found in Can Hasan 2B. The buttress protrudes ca. 60cm, and as it is binding into the wall, another brick format, most likely 60cm by 40cm, must have been in use as well. A sketch of how I think the masonry was done can be found on the 5063 unit sheet.
