Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Small team today as MB has left, Ismail is working somewhere else again since yesterday and others were sick, and myself feeling a bit dizzy and affected by the stomach bug. Also, we had a strong S wind today, which is an unusal weather situation. Don't want to think about how the trench will look like tomorrow after our spoil heap (sitting S of the trench) has been re-deposited in the trench by the wind overnight. Sitting on TEBs chair for a few hours doing some paperwork helped, and I drew wall 5051 (same as 2425) in the afternoon.

Brenna and DEL lifted the baby 16835 and DEL finished the surrounding soil unit 17229. Then it was time for pit fill 17229 to come out, revealing a line of tiles (unit 17232) and an adult human ulna sticking in an adjacent molehole running under the W part of wall 5050. Could once have belonged to the skeleton 14298 of grave 2420.

JMR drew the walls and buttresses around space 340 in plan, TEB and RBW documented most of the walls exposed this year with the Total Station, and AWH continued unit 17214 in space 310. SO took out the last small finds in 17225, such as very fragle large potstand. Then she cleaned the wall that forms the S boundary of her roomfill, and together with the results of JMRs brushing in and around space 345, the SE corner of the trench is now also filled with architecture. The only unclear area that remains is the E third of the trench where anoher grave obscures the walls we should expect there. Can't be tackled this year, as this means moving the tent and expanding the trench. Looking forward to defining the first building next year!
