Excavation Diary Entry

Name: ER
Team:
Date: 8/15/2008
Entry: My last day in Catal for this year, most of the team has left already. The last few days were mainly spent by documentation and drawing, except in space 310.

After going deeper with unit 17214, a older layer of plaster (unit 17249) underlying 13726 was exposed. We are very happy that we had recognized the lower edge of 13726 and had opened a new spit in the roomfill after 16898. The fact that potsherd clusters continued to stick out vertically from the roomfill, however, and the lack of change in the look of the roomfill, however, indicate that there was no surface etc. Also nothing is visible in the profile betwenn the two yet unnamed buttresses in the S of the space. However, as this profile tells us, the last 10cm of the roomfill taken down with 17214, roughly coninciding in level with the edge of 17249, look more uniform than the stuff that was above it. Belwo this edge, the walls have only mudbrick, no plaster. As Jonathan had suggested in one of his interim reports on building 25 that plaster might have been stripped in some of his spaces, I wonder if that happened here. Potsherds stuck out vertically from the roomfill all the way through. Looking forward to finding out more next year: complete buildings and floors!

Today Hassan took the documentation to the copyshop after I had a last look through it and created a list of well-stratified units for the various labs, especially for IF. He can now sort his sherdgarden according to the matrix.

This year was the best for me here in Catal so far: we have first results on the structure of the architecture of the EC I, we had a wonderful team and a very good cooperation with the Selcuk team. Thanks to everybody for the dust you had to breathe in order to get us down into the EC strat this year!
