The brown layer underneath unit 18311 (in space 342), described in previous diary entries, has now been defined as unit 18328. The day was spent completing excavation of unit 18311 and then drawing a plan of the top of newly-exposed unit 18328 - the top of which slopes down from the south of the unit to the north. After having the plan checked, 18328 will now be ready to be excavated - in search of space 342's thus-far elusive floor. The slope of 18328, if indeed it does overlie a surface (as previously suggested), would appear to present possible implications regarding the nature of any floor - in particular that a floor might be to some extent collapsed, conceivably also hinting at the possibility of another structural level (e.g. a basement) below it. Alternatively, of course, the slope could be indicative of nothing more than a fill piled disproportionately to one side - upon a perfectly horizontal surface. |
