Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Today PTW, JFB and myself continued in space 343 lifting room fill 18314. The lower coarse of mudbricks underlying the walls defining space 343 (F.5074, 5050=2425, 2426) continue to be exposed as we lift 18314. The fill 18314 contains very few inclusions when taking into consideration the volume that has been dry sieved. Several grinding stone fragments were recovered from around the same area in the fill, adding to those previously recovered in the nearby area in recent days, which has caused some concern as it has been suggested that they might indicate the present ofa pit because the rest of the unit appears to be so sterile. The top surface of F.5074 was scraped and cleaned in order to define its limits more clearly and understand its extent in relation to space 343. PFB has mentioned that I thought I had spotted the northwestern corner of space 343, however, since cleaning and wetting the wall, it appears that the wall F.5074 runs straight into the western profile without any break in direction, leaving me to accept that no corner is currently visible.

ER and SRW continued to excavate the yellow layer 18328 in space 342 where they recovered a lot of small finds including several pot stands.

SO and EMM worked in space 345 where they are now excavating layer 18337 which appears to contain a lense of burnt charcoal or ash (18338). They also created a cluster unit for a series of large pot fragments that appear to form large parts of vessels and could be re-fitted (18335).

JMR recorded to northern elevation of space 310 before continuing to excavate and define fill layer 18326. The southern elevation and section of space 310, on the southern limits of trench 5, were re-cut to remove the dried out layer that had formed over recent seasons and to produce a fresh section in which to better understand the space. It appears that the southern wall of space 310 is discontinuous, divided by a large amount of room fill that could be defining some sort of entrance into the space.

Current and new units were outlined today for the daily sketch.

I have had to re-write this entry twice because I forgot to save the record, so all those reading that write diary entries DON'T FORGET TO SAVE!
