Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Hello Chaps and Chapess'!!
Welcome to my first diary entry, and about time too.
Thought of the day: It's sooooooooooooo Hoooooooooot and not good for gingers.

It is my third week and second year of being here and I am enjoying it immensely. At the moment I am working in Building 80 with Roddy, Maxime and Alisa but I'm also providing supervisory support to the UC Marced team who are working in Space 329; an are to the north of Building 80.

The UC Marced team are experimenting with 3D scanning, as such they are recording each Unit of what is currently a midden and will continue into the fill of the underlying building. The aim of the experiment is to have a 3D model of their area of excavation that can be pulled apart unit by unit with information regarding the volume of material removed available.

Currently work has been unfortunately held up by a leaning wall within the north of the area of excavation that is a potential health and safety nightmare! So after consulting the UC Marced team they have excavated a series of midden fills to the north of the wall which has now allowed the wall to be effectively recorded and dismantled by three courses beginning tomorrow morning.

On the building 80 front we have been gradually picking our way through what is regarded as possible roof collapse, which includes the burnt remains of cross timbers, of which there were approximately 14. Associated with the collapsed roof is demolition/dump material both above and below the timbers (which have been identified as Oak and Juniper).

Just this week we have begun to see floor level, a series of platforms in the north west, north east and south east including a bench and buchrania along the east wall.

The building is largely clear of finds, with the exception of a seed cluster in the south east, an obsidian cluster in the north west and a scatter of obsidian tools within numerous unit material dumps associated with the closing of the building. It's all groovy stuff.

There is continued debate as to whether Building 80 stood at two storey or at least one and a partial second storey. This is due to the difficulty in identifying the collapsed roof … or at least pulling apart and burnt collapsed roof and a burnt collapsed ceiling. At the very least there was a kind of storage place as visible from the inverted rail within the upper part of the north wall, which I might add I excavated last year.

Oooohhhhhhhhhh my God, is that the time .. Effe's!!
