Excavation Diary Entry

Name: JMR
Team:
Date: 8/4/2010
Entry: JFB, BOD and XHB finished excavating burial F.3317 which will be drawn tomorrow. Burial F.3316, its extensions defined by BOD through scraping (15146) turned out to be partially under F.3317 and can therefore only be started after 3317 is removed.

The topsoil in the eastern extension of the trench (15138) is completely removed excluding some space around the burial F.3316. BOD and XHB started scraping and levelling the northern part of the extension (also unit 15138), where mudbrick structured and plaster lines started to become visible. The structures in this part, including features in the former NE corner of the trench already visible in 2008 (F.5072, 5070, 5052), have been very confusing so far and will hopefully become clearer by the extension and scraping.

EMM and SCS are going deeper in Space 341 (15152). Apart from a lot of artefacts, this unit also contained a larger piece of red painted plaster lying flat. The dark, rectangular spot surrounded by plaster, west of buttress F.5057, which we believed to be some mudbrick structure, does not continue downwards. The other supposed mud brick feature south of buttress F.5054 has not yet been checked, neither have the downwards continuation of the walls.

LKH continued excavating room fill in Space 340 (15144). The fill at this level contains an unsual high number of pieces of red painted yellowish-white plaster. They do not form structured, but seem to have fallen into the room from above or been brought there through backfilling. LKH is recording their position and orientation in order to get an idea of how those pieces of plaster came into the room fill.

PTW and me finished the topsoil unit 15140 south of spaces 310, 345 and 342. In its western part, a skeleton appeared. So far, skull and left arm are visible and some yellowish bricks around them which do not seem to form a regular structure at the moment. JFB will start excavating this burial tomorrow after having finished F.3317. This new burial F.3318 will unfortunately put off our plans to excavate the southern extension of Space 310 as soon as possible. We took the sandbags out of Space 310 today and started cleaning it. The winter and some plants growing there do not seem to have destroyed much of the fill and structures. The uppermost parts of the walls F.2408, 5058 and 2427 look rather worn off, though, and have some cracks. We intend to removed them after having excavated the room fill to the base of that walls.
