Excavation Diary Entry

Entry: Excavator's log, dunno which Catal Day.
After a delightfully free day, we find ourselves back in our much beloved trench 5, which I get to know better than almost everyone else it seems: I'm jolly jumper at the moment, working east and west, north and south... wherever needed.
I started helping JFB to draw the cut (unit 15143) of the burial (feature 3317), which we excavated yesterday and afterwards joined her at the excavation of the burial in the south-western corner of the trench (feature 3318). This person seems to be less disturbed (muhar) than the first one, as the bones from head to pelvis are relatively articulated. The legs couldn't be found, not even 10cm deeper in the soil than the other bones. Either they erodet because of the slope, some animal took them along or there was some other kind of disturbance. Or maybe s/he never had legs. Who knows. Maybe we will find them tomorrow. Maybe. Maybe not. Excavating is development. Maybe. ;-P
Noteworthy are the small red fragments of something (pigment?) that I found on the southern side of the pelvis and the costae which I worked on. JFB took samples of similar stuff before, so we did not take any more. I noticed about 3 or 4 fragments no larger than 4mm (estimate) in this area.

Later I returned to the place of my first crime of the day, where Ismael and I removed the soil around the cut 15143, which belongs to unit 15138 to bring this unit to one level. There we hit upon quite a number of human bones and teeth (poor JFB had to ran back and forth to confirm our suspicions), which were bagged and labeled as belonging to this unit, though they might belong to the adjoining burial (feature 3317). I guess it's JFB's job to find out whether or not we have one person or more there. The bones seemed to lie outside of the burial's cut, but could have been transported there by erosion, animals, weird happenings or something else. Who knows.

Working with Ismael is fine, he's helpful and communication through gestures and the one or other English or Turkish word works mostly. I just don't know, in which tasks I should involve him or not. Maybe I should start a communication based on gestures and the one or other English or German word with our trenchmaster to clarify this matter.

SCS out.
